The Thief

Yu Zhaoyuan arrived at Jiabiangou in the spring of 1958. Before his conviction, Yu headed the Xigu district government’s Human Resources Department in Lanzhou. He was at Jiabiangou for three years. Following his release in 1961, he was sent back to his native Jinta County, where he was ordered to do farmwork under supervision. His Rightist label was officially overturned in 1979. Once, during a casual conversation, a neighbor asked Yu how he managed to survive Jiabiangou when thousands had died of starvation there. He replied, “I was a shrewd and notorious thief.” I interviewed Yu at his apartment in Jinta County.
